The Bermudian

A few weeks back the Bermuda Trade Development Board received the following letter addressed to St. George’s:

Gentlemen:
Back in 1936, Mr. Sydney Wheeler, Resident Manager of the St. George Hotel advised me that your office was forwarding to him a picture of the famous landmark, the Durnford House. He was in turn to forward the same to the writer. This has never been received and would be greatly treasured if such a picture could be located in your files.

This is for genealogical records of our family and since I have removed further away from your Isle of Charm, I doubt if I will be able to take such a picture for myself. Of course, we will always keep hoping…

This house was built by on Major Andrew Durnford, first mayor of your city, who in turn is a grandparent four generations removed from my children.
If this favor can be extended at this time, it will be greatly treasured by the writer.

Most sincerely yours,
CARL C. BURDICK
1871 Chestnut Ave.,
Long Beach California

Momentarily stunned by this example of monumental patience, Mr. Colin Selley, publicity director, pulled himself together and quickly dispatched a photographero take pictures of the Durnford House, which stands opposite the Somers Opera House and is now owned by Mr. F.C. Outerbridge. The photographs, with an appropriate letter from Mr. Selley, were sped off to Mr. Burdick whose 23-year wait was at last rewarded.
