The Bermudian

This past year has proven to be another difficult one for Bermudian businesses.

However, with tough times come tougher people, and companies that continue to sell great products and give great service not only survive, they thrive in this economy. Our judges took considerable time and made a great effort to acknowledge all of those businesses that go above and beyond the norm and deserve recognition for their hard work.

In this our 11th year, the Product & Service Awards have honoured 46 local businesses and business people - from one of Bermuda's premier reinsurance companies to a 10-year-old entrepreneur who has taken the lemonade stand to a whole new level. We hope you join us in supporting as many of them as you can over the holiday season and congratulating them on their awards.

We also take this opportunity to thank our judges, who used their varied expertise in choosing the winners. We appreciate their diligence and their dedication to making our annual awards a success.

Take-Out Lunch
Nonna's Kitchen
They may be the new kids on the block, but Nonna's Kitchen is getting noticed as the best place to grab a quick and healthy lunch. Owned and run by Norma Thompson, Nonna's serves homemade soups, fresh salads and home-baked goods including gluten-free and dairy-free items. It is making us hungry just thinking about it! 4 Bermudiana Road, Hamilton. Tel: 295-7687

Place for Computer Sales

Our judges all had huge kudos for the excellent in-store and on-site service, extensive website and pleasant staff at Redlaser, but it was the impressive customer-service experience of one of them that put the company over the top in this category. With the customer expecting perhaps a day or two for delivery of an external hard drive, Redlaser arrived at the office a mere 30 minutes after the order was placed on-line, hard drive in hand. Speedy service like that is definitely deserving of an award in our books! 12 Bakery Lane, Pembroke. Tel: 296-6544, www.redlaser.bm

Hotel/Guest House for the Business Traveller

The Oxford House
Owned and operated by the beloved Mrs. Ann Smith since 1983, The Oxford House came highly rated by our judges this year. With a dozen spacious guest rooms all beautifully decorated in classic Bermudian charm while kitted out with all the modern conveniences needed by a business traveller, The Oxford House is the perfect place to wind down after a long, busy day at the Bermuda office. 20 Woodbourne Avenue, Pembroke. Local Business Ad Campaign

Perry Footwear

Their commercials are deceptively simple - the latest hit single plays, still images of lust-worthy shoes flash and a logo pops up at the end. But every time they run on television the kids start dancing, the women start taking mental notes and the men start handing over their wallets! Now if we can only figure out how to claim new shoes as a business expens. 44 Reid Street, Hamilton. Tel: 296-8097, This email address is being protected from spambots. Along with their impeccable service, BG serves a three-course business lunch that changes monthly. Our judges love it for the quiet booths where business deals can be made in relative privacy. 5 Burnaby Street, Hamilton. Tel: 292-1609, This email address is being protected from spambots. Floral Designer
Flowers by GiMi
"They always do a phenomenal job," stated one of our judges when discussing the award for Flowers by GiMi, while another spoke highly of their "fabulous Front Street store." Best Company to Work For
Good companies offer their staff a fair salary, standard benefits and a few extra perks. The best company supports its staff with an in-house gym with a daily fitness programme, lunch in the office each day, housing support for Bermudians and expatriates, year-round training and development, education incentives and rewards for successfully achieving professional designations and a generous charitable-donations matching programme. RenaissanceRe, one of the world's largest and most successful reinsurers of natural and man-made catastrophes, is Bermuda's best company to work for because of the aforementioned perks - and a culture that fosters success and values employees. They also play a considerable part in helping locals succeed by providing international work experience in various office locations, offering an annual undergraduate scholarship and maintaining a paid student-intern programme. Renaissance House, 12 Crow Lane, Pembroke. Tel: 295 4513, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., www.renre.com

Company Christmas Party Venue
Charming and intimate, our judges recommend Ascots for the perfect Christmas party venue. Royal Palms Hotel, 24 Rosemont Avenue, Pembroke. Tel: 295-9644, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., www.ascots.bm

Clever Customer Incentive Programme
Cafe 4
We believe loyalty should always be rewarded. Doing it in a tech-savvy new way makes it award-worthy. Our judges love the Loyalty Card programme at Cafe 4. The premise is pretty simple: spend $11-plus and you get a stamp, after nine stamps they give you $11 back in purchases. Cards are available for traditional stamping, of course, but customers with smart phones can go to stampme.com and download an app that works as your virtual loyalty card. The cashier then gives you a barcode to scan at the checkout - it is as easy as that. Who said there is no such thing as a free lunch? Windsor Place (Washington Mall), 18 Queen Street, Hamilton. Entrepreneur - Special Mention
Ashley's Lemonade
Our judges felt they would be remiss not to give a special mention to 10-year-old entrepreneur Ashley Stephens who owns and runs Ashley's Lemonade. You can find Ashley squeezing fresh lemons on Saturdays outside her mom's store Upscale Fashions next to Saltus or at any of the major events around the island where her stands tend to pop up. She says she's raising the money for college, and we have no doubt she's going on to be one of Bermuda's best entrepreneurs one day!

A diversified architectural practice, Botelho Wood are also responsible for the Bermuda Building Design Award-winning Concordia Maritime offices, the recent renovation of Vasco Da Gama Club and a host of private residences, as well as more public projects like Newstead Resort & Spa and The Hamptons condominium development. 8 South Shore Road, Smith's. Internet Service Provider

An amalgamation with North Rock Communications Ltd. earlier this year has resulted in Logic becoming the best ISP in Bermuda, at least according to our judges! Government Service
We all remember the old days of TCD when you had to take a day off work to license your car or bike, but today's Transport Control Department is now the best government service, say our judges. Project is aimed at encouraging the community to use reusable bags through education and even a proposal to government for a "bag charge." Considering the fact that single-use bags create toxic by-products when manufactured, clog beaches, kill wildlife and cost you money, the choice to bring your own bag is a pretty simple one. www.greenrock.org
