At The Bermudian magazine we relish the opportunity to praise successful local businesses that excel in their respective areas of expertise and to celebrate them in our annual Product & Service Awards.

In this, our 14th year, we acknowledge talented entrepreneurs like Rebecca Singleton, who recently opened a retail store for her TABS shorts, and praise companies like KPMG for their community service. We are equally proud to award newcomers like The Brand Lion and F3 Fitness alongside perennial winners like A.F. Smith and Redlaser—all of whom stand out in their respective fields.

The Bermudian is extremely grateful to our judges, who gave their significant time, energy and expertise to research and poll in each of these following categories before coming together to decide the winners. Without their dedication these awards would not be possible. Our endless appreciation goes to:

• Stephanie Lee, social media and special events promotions manager, iHope Global, and consultant, SocialLEE Consulting

• Jamila Godwin, marketing executive, KPMG

• Ron Spencer III, founder, Relay for Life of Bermuda & The Plan [B] Project and business development, Colonial Medical Insurance Company Ltd.

• Jenny Smatt, president and senior consultant, Ontru Ltd.

• Raymond Tannock, consultant, Bermuda Business Development Agency

The Bermudian is proud to acknowledge the following businesses and business people and we hope you continue to support them in equal measure.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Abacus

Generally speaking, most people aren’t overwhelmingly excited about accounting firms. However, there is just something different about Abacus that gets the firm recognition year after year in our awards. This year our judges polled as many people as they could to help them choose the winners, and Abacus had one of the highest vote counts in the survey. “It’s surprising that anyone would get excited about accounting,” said one judge. “But Abacus came up over and over again.”

Owned by Megan (Aruda) Nesbit, CMA, the firm has a number of highly trained CPA-qualified staff who provide personalised accounting and bookkeeping services primarily for small and medium-sized businesses and charitable organisations. Their attention to detail and exceptional service has earned them several Product & Service Awards over the last few years—including a three-peat from 2012 to 2014. This year the quiet quality of their work stood out from the other winners, and we are pleased to award them with the first Product & Service Award of Excellence.

From the highest quality ergonomic office chairs to humorous stickynote pads, our judges say A.F. Smith has the best selection of office furniture and supplies on the island. Regardless of whether you are simply setting up a small home office or outfitting a new 15,000-square foot open plan building space, the wide selection of furniture systems and accoutrements available can be quickly ordered, delivered and installed by their knowledgeable staff, getting your business up and running in no time.

COMPUTER SALES
Redlaser Ltd.

When it comes to computer sales, our judges enthusiastically recommend the extensive selection and superior customer service at Redlaser. No matter where you stand on the Apple vs PC debate, the knowledgeable staff can advise on the best computer for your needs and recommend all the necessary dohickeys and thingamajigs even the most computer illiterate among us could ever want. Plus, the islandwide, sameday, free delivery is enough to impress even the savviest computer shoppers.
Ground Floor, 12 Bakery Lane, Pembroke, 296-6400, www.redlaser.bm

IT SUPPORT
Decisions Limited

Purchasing the computers and supplies for your office is the easy part, actually setting up intricate network systems, installing and maintaining specialised software and making it all work wirelessly should be left to the professionals. Our judges voted the talented team at Decisions Limited as the best IT Support company to turn to when your office is just starting up, upgrading its system, renovating, relocating or simply trying to improve its business programs and, ultimately of course, the bottom line.
5 Bakery Lane, Pembroke, 295-4533, www.decisions.bm

HR SERVICES
Expertise

Regardless of size, most companies need a number of human resource services from time to time, but not all can maintain a full-time HR department. Our judges recommend Expertise when your business is looking to outsource anything from c-suite executive searches, temporary staffing and payroll processing to relocation, training and teambuilding. Currently managing over 250 local companies in a wide range of industries—including insurance and reinsurance, banking, telecommunications, retail and more—Expertise have proven to be true experts in their field.

TRAVEL AGENCY
Worldview Travel

We are keenly aware that most people with an internet connection are more than capable of booking their tickets online these days when island fever kicks in and they need to get off the rock. However, when a company calls for organising an entire department to attend a weekend conference, involving several flights, hotel bookings and transportation, we suggest leaving it to the professionals at Worldview Travel. Their corporate travel support services can plan the detailed itinerary, offer 24/7 travel assistance and even save the company money by maximising reward programmes and taking advantage of group discounts.
35 Church Street, Hamilton, 292-3033, www.worldviewtravel.bm

LEGAL SERVICES

It all adds up to make Abacus the best.

OFFICE CLEANING SERVICE
Bermuda Cleaning Limited

The best office cleaners are the ones you never think about. They arrive after everyone has left for the day and employees return the next morning to spotless floors, dustless workstations and empty trashcans. However, the importance of a clean and healthy working environment cannot be understated, and thus our judges recommend Bermuda Cleaning Limited to get the job done. State-of-the-art equipment and machines, use of eco-friendly cleaning products and their 24/7 emergency response helped to set them apart.
23 Serpentine Road, Pembroke, 295-1378, www.bermudacleaning.bm

COURIER
DHL

The downside to living on an island paradise is that often the specialised tools and supplies companies need to function must be ordered and shipped in, important contracts with overseas partners need to be securely transferred and local goods need to be delivered across the ocean. For their efficient service, impressive communication and reliable delivery men and women, DHL have risen above to the rest this year to be awarded best courier by our judges.

GOVERNMENT SERVICE
Ferry Service

There is nothing at all enjoyable about crawling along Harbour Road in bumper-to-bumper traffic heading to town before fighting for a parking spot morning after morning. We say skip the morning madness and hop aboard a Sea Express ferry for a stress-free—and rather picturesque—commute into town.

The entrepreneur has a background in marketing and an eye for design, and after a year of research and development she launched her carefully designed shorts. They were an instant success and Singleton opened her first official TABS store on Reid Street this past summer. Opening a retail store while others are closing down? GREEN COMPANY OR INITIATIVE
BE Solar

Any company that can take the sting out of a monthly BELCO bill is award-worthy in our books! But the best, say our judges, is BE Solar. This family-owned company was founded in 1935 by Gordon H. Burland who designed The Bermuda Sun Heater—a solar water-heating system—in the mid-1930s. More recently, BE Solar installed the panels on the roof of the Acute Care Wing of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital which will produce up to 900 gallons of hot water per day and significantly reduce operating costs. In between, they have been helping people save a whole lot of green by going green.
