Old Bermuda Charm and Modern Renovation Coexist in the Outerbridge Family Home

The Outerbridge family abode is home to Carol, Bill and their daughter, Catherine. The Outerbridges moved into their Middle Road, Paget home in January of 2004 after falling head-over-heels in-love with its charm and character. They invited us in on a warm, sunny afternoon and promised us that by the time we left we would feel the warmth and happiness their home exudes.

Nestledown, as it's named, originally belonged to the Frith family who at one time owned property all the way across to the South Shore. The home was built as a modest farmhouse, which is obvious even today as the downstairs family room that once was the farmhouse kitchen still has the original bricked floor and built in fireplaces.

The home was built in the 1700s and has been renovated and modernized throughout the years since then. The most intriguing aspect of the home, one that the Outerbridges are especially proud of, is the perfect combination of the home's old-Bermuda charm and its modern practicality. Original Bermuda Cedar beams still line the ceilings while surround-sound speakers are inconspicuously hidden throughout the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The Outerbridges have decorated their home in the things they love, showcasing old family heirlooms and contemporary pieces they've collected on their travels with the same exuberance and love.

Carol, Bill and Catherine agree that the best thing about their home is its welcoming feel. From the time you set foot on their property, the warmth and charm of their family home immediately captivates you. Through the outdoor courtyard and in through the Bermuda Cedar double doors, it's impossible to not acquire a fondness for this old-Bermuda home. As Carol explains, "Nestledown, as its name implies, settles into the landscape and draws you in."

The enclosed courtyard in the back of the home is a popular spot for the Outerbridges. "It is private, charming and a place we love to entertain family and friends," explains Carol. "In the summer we eat most of our meals under the huge umbrella, enjoying the ambiance and privacy." In fact, during the summer months the Outerbridges enjoy their outdoor living spaces as much as possible. "I love the big, mature trees - I get a kick out of watching the birds that frequent them," says Carol. They also admit that a sunny afternoon spent relaxing by the pool is always an enjoyable experience.

A unique part of the family home is the Bermuda Cedar porch which overlooks the southside of the property. It's a great place to sit and relax while overlooking the trees. A couple of years ago, Tim Ward stripped, repaired and recaulked it in its traditional manner - a labour of love that is invaluable to the family.

Equally as loved by the family as their gardens are their indoor living spaces, which are their favourites during the cooler months of the year. Beautiful fireplaces in both the living room and dining room come alive with roaring fires and time spent together as a family. The downstairs family room is where the Outerbridges hang out together watching TV and movies. Jake, the family lab, even has his own comfy bed to curl up in and snooze!

Thank you, Carol, Bill, Catherine and Jake for inviting us into your beautiful Bermuda home and garden!
