As promised, I spent this week hunting for steals, deals and discounts island-wide and during the process I found that although it may not be glamorous rifling through used items, some of the things that can be found are nothing short of spectacular!
On my search I made the trek to St. George's, to the Second Hand Rose Shop, which I have heard so much about but until now, never had a reason to go and explore it myself. Located at Penno's Wharf on the first floor of the World Heritage Centre, the Second Hand Rose Shop is brimming with gently used home goods which have been donated by members of the community and the money from their sale benefits the St. George's Foundation.
As soon as I walked in, I immediately dug in and started exploring. Silverware, crystal goblets, Bermuda Cedar trays, all in great condition and at prices that are simply unbeatable but the real treasure was found laying against the side of a wall, almost unnoticeable. A framed Ethel Tucker watercolour print for only $15.00! For that price, how could you not want it - that's the cost of lunch! I for one would skip lunch for a framed Ethel Tucker print.
Now I know some of you are saying to yourselves: Who is Ethel Tucker? Shame on you! Ethel Tucker is a very well known Bermudian artist, who lived between 1874 and 1962 and spent her life painting watercolor scenes of Bermuda. She is so popular in fact that Queen Elizabeth has 20 original paintings in her private collection. And whatever is good enough for the Queen is good enough for me, too!
So head down to the Second Hand Rose Shop and see what you can discover. Who knows, a pair of Jimmy Choo's may be waiting for you!
