Registered Charity #391

Supporting Agape House since 1994, Friends of Hospice has been providing volunteer services and financial support to help operate Bermuda’s only hospice care facility.

Through the support from annual fundraising events as well as corporate and foundation grants and memorial donations, Friends of Hospice provides services and programmes free of charge for patients and families to enhance the quality of life for those who are actively dying, as well as provide the necessary support to palliative care patients.

Friends of Hospice also offers a support group for family, friends, and loved ones as well as a Day Hospice programme for those patients who have been discharged home and receiving care.

Patients have access to art therapy; complementary therapy such as meditation, massage, yoga, pet therapy and music experience. There are also patient support and life appreciation celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries.

The kitchen at Agape House aims to meet the needs of the patient’s palate, whether that is steak and lobster or smoothies, and by Friends of Hospice covers the full costs of the on-site kitchen, which includes a fulltime chef, food and equipment.

Each programme is supported by professional therapists and volunteers whose aim is to make those patients with serious illnesses as comfortable and happy as possible by treating them with dignity and compassion, as well as by providing support for their loved ones.

In addition to services and programmes, Friends of Hospice strives to spread awareness of hospice, palliative, and end of life care in the community. Throughout the year, Friends of Hospice hosts community and panel discussions about how to have that difficult conversation about end of life with family and loved ones. Friends of Hospice also provides training for community professionals and staff about having Difficult Conversations with their clients and patients.

Friends of Hospice has over 150 active volunteers and there are plenty of opportunities for those interested in providing their time for fundraising events, transportation and administrative assistance. Companioning the Dying is another volunteer opportunity for those interested in spending 1:1 time with patients. Special training is required for these volunteers and provided annually.

Friends of Hospice was recertified by the Bermuda National Standards certificate in 2016, which provides consistency in policy and operating practices. The charity is actively working towards accreditation for their Day Hospice programme.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board, who own and operate Agape House, collaborates with Friends of Hospice to ensure that service delivery meets best practice standards and patient expectations.
