My husband and I went to Amsterdam recently, and while we were there, two things dawned on me. One: that it’s a beautiful city, and we should have visited it sooner. And two: that a lot of posh food is actually rubbish.

I know that globalization is a dirty word, because my husband told me so when I announced that I planned to write my column about how the world had, in the 20 years since I'd left home, become a much smaller place.
