| The Ban on Secondhand Cars April 1946 |
|
In addition, the bill would ban the importation of secondhamd motor cars, nor would any auto-bicycles or automobiles be allowed on the public roads until 100 taxi-cabs have been licensed. This a concession to the Council which has been in favour of providing public transportation before private use. As a further restriction, the bill provides that once having obtained a car licence, a person could not change the machine until five years had elapsed unless it was damaged. The size specifications, generally conform to those laid down in the 1943 Car Act. They call for small vehicles. Meanwhile, delivery has been made of two of the six motor buses which the Bermuda government has bought from the Public service Corporation of New Jersey. These will be out immediately into operation on a South Shore Road route to the East End.
