April 1940

In an April 1940 article, Pembroke Marsh is deemed as "wasteland" as plans are unveiled to redevelop it into a park with numerous trees, hibiscus and cedars. It's unnerving that nowadays, "wasteland" is redeveloped into a condo-complex with a heated swimming pool and a private dock. How times have changed...

Pembroke Marsh, into which went thousands of pounds of the Colony’s money in a futile effort to reclaim the waste land, is now undergoing a more practicable process of face lifting. The Bermuda Labour Corps, whose efforts have been recruited to remove various territorial eyesores from the countryside, are at work in the construction of a playing field, bridle path, walks. The entire marsh are will be reclaimed with the exception of the two ponds, around which will wind the bridle path, and an avenue of willow trees. Planting will be profuse, including red sandalwoods, royal poincianas, French oaks, black ebony trees, cedars, sword trees, casuarinas and hibiscus. There will also be clumps of oleanders, cocoanut palms groves, various species of cacti and other decorative shrubs. The Labour Service Corps, now numbering three hundred and forty men, have more than a hundred engaged in the marsh scheme. Directing the task is Mr. Gordon R. Groves of the Agricultural Department.
