The Bermudian

Molly Goes West
Author/Illustrator: Molly D. Smith

The Late Artist Molly Smith’s newly published coffee table book, Molly Goes West, is the sequel to her first publication, Discovering Bermuda with Paintbrush and Bike, originally published in 2005 when the artist was 85 years old. Her first book took us on a meandering journey through the eastern parishes on her pedal bike with her sketchbook and water colour paints in hand. Molly Goes West details the second half of that journey.

With meticulous research, gorgeous water colour paintings and fascinating historical details and recipes throughout, Molly Goes West is a must-have companion book to the original. Sadly, Smith passed away during the editing process but her husband, Joe, and daughter, Felicity, worked to complete the book on her behalf.

As much an insider’s travel guide as a charmingly illustrated view of each of the western parishes, each chapter starts with a map of her travels along with detailed sketches of the area’s flora and fauna and spectacular illustrations of local architecture.

Born in India in 1921, Molly Smith moved to Wales when she was two and came to live in Bermuda with her husband, who is also an artist, in 1946. Her family thought art to be a precarious way to make a living and as such she never undertook formal art studies. It wasn’t until her retirement from a demanding law office post in 1986 that Smith began pursuing her love of drawing and painting on a full-time basis.

Smith’s love of nature is manifested in her botanical, landscape and seascape paintings while her love of architecture can be seen in her detailed paintings and ink sketches of historical buildings. She often worked on location, choosing subjects linked with Bermuda’s history, which has fascinated the artist since her arrival over half a century ago.

On the back of Molly Goes West, the artist leaves us a final thought: “In the rush of modern life, little time is left for appreciating the flora, fauna, geology, history and, above all, the many facets of Bermuda’s old and unique architecture. In my first book, Discovering Bermuda with Paintbrush and Bike, and in this, its sequel, I have endeavoured to savour the beauty of Bermuda and to capture its charm. I hope this journal of my painting excursions in the western half of Bermuda will give equal enjoyment.”
