Bermudian fashionista, Ashley Aitken, has made a name for herself in the local fashion industry with her clothing line ElleTee, which will be featured in the Bermuda Fashion Collective on June 3rd at the Bermuda Society of Arts. The Bermudian dug deeper into the mind of this creative young lady who promises to change the way Bermudians connect to fashion for years to come!
Bermudian: Describe your designs.
Ashley: Sophisticated styles with a unique, sassy flare, draped with quality fabrics in vibrant colours and exotic patterns.
Bermudian: What inspires you?
Ashley: The beauty that I find in just about anything and everything.... people, places, nature, fabrics, art, music, interesting structures... the list is never ending.
Bermudian: What has been your biggest challenge?
Ashley: Believing in my work and vision without the need for approval from others.
Bermudian: Where do you envision yourself and your business in five years?
Ashley: I will probably be still working hard to improve my craft. I hope that by that time I will have a team of people working with me to produce well-made custom designs for a large client base. I also plan to have a ready-to-wear line available for purchase regularly in local stores. It is my dream that ElleTee becomes the first place a Bermudian woman thinks to come when they want to look and feel like a Goddess.
Bermudian: How do you market your work?
Ashley: Word of mouth, fashion shows & shopping events. I also update my blog... occasionally..! I also market with photo shoots and updates on what I am up to on social networks.
Bermudian: What drives you?
Ashley: Knowing that I feel most alive when I am designing and creating something beautiful. Also, the hope that I will inspire others to find a way to truly enjoy life by developing their creative talents and finding a love for themselves inside and out drives me.
Bermudian: What would you want Bermudian Business Magazine to say about you in ten years?
Ashley: That I have been an inspiration to young Bermudians and have contributed to bettering our community.
Bermudian: If you could start your career over, what would you do differently?
Ashley: I have only just started! I think that every stage in my life, good and bad, has prepared me for what is to come. I probably would have taken a few sewing classes a lot sooner than I did.
Bermudian: What do you think of the local fashion industry?
Ashley: For the most part I think that Bermudians dress well. I love the variety of unique styles that can be seen amongst the fashionable and sophisticated. I also think there are many people that could use some refining and others could use some encouraging, which is understandable given the limited fashions that are available on the Island. I find that many Bermudians feel like they need to travel abroad to stock up on their wardrobe, but not everyone is able to do this. As the fashion industry develops, and I am optimistic that it will, I think more and more people will begin to take risks and experiment with their look, hopefully while maintaining a level of class.
Bermudian: If you could be mentored by a designer (living or deceased), who would that be?
Ashley: Oscar De La Renta
