It started, as many stories do, with a pencil and a stack of paper. “I used to design and draw houses when I was young,” says Georgia Benevides. “I’ve always loved houses.” That childhood hobby became a calling, and eventually a career. Today, she leads Benevides & Associates Architects, a small, design-focused firm known for its timeless take on Bermuda’s architectural heritage.
Georgia founded the business with her late husband David while on maternity leave. “We started the firm while I was pregnant,” she says. “It just took off, luckily.” David, an accomplished architect and tireless worker, became both her partner and mentor. His legacy continues to shape the firm’s ethos: quiet excellence, attention to detail, and a deep respect for traditional Bermudian design.
Based out of Bamboo Gate on Harbour Road in Paget, Benevides & Associates has kept its focus narrow and its standards high. “Our vision has always been good design,” Georgia says simply. The firm’s signature style—traditional Bermuda exteriors paired with modern, livable interiors—can be seen in standout projects like Fairwinds on South Shore, Barnacle and Southside on Harrington Sound, and a recently completed build in Riddell’s Bay. “We have a lot of favourites,” she adds with a smile.
Though the size of the team has shifted with the times, the focus has remained steady. Today, the office includes five others, some of whom work remotely. “They all believe in good design and a well-executed set of construction drawings,” Georgia says. That commitment to craft has helped the firm weather the ups and downs of the local economy.
Of course, building in Bermuda isn’t without its challenges. “Where do I begin?” she laughs. “Planning delays, sourcing materials, a shortage of workers—it’s not always easy on an island.” But the team has adapted. Over the years, they’ve incorporated solar panels, Tesla batteries, and custom hurricane shutters into their projects, especially when clients are open to sustainable solutions.
When it comes to process, Georgia keeps it client-focused. “We start by getting to know our clients first—their tastes, how they want to live. Then we help them shape the scope: bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage. That’s when the design begins.”
Looking ahead, she sees homes becoming “smarter and more efficient,” though her own philosophy won’t be changing anytime soon. “My design approach is still rooted in classic Bermudian architecture,” she says. “That’s what I love.”
As for what success means at this point in her career? “Family,” she says. “My career has been good, but that’s what matters most.”
And for young Bermudians thinking about architecture? “It’s a lot of work,” she admits, “but it can be really rewarding.”
