Bermuda International Institute of Ophthalmology was founded in 1998 by Dr. Leonard Teye-Botchway, who has been the Medical Director since inception. The institute’s mission is to deliver outstanding eye care through continuous enhancements in procedures, policies and technology. Its staff of committed, skillful professionals possess a progressive and caring outlook.
The institute is a comprehensive ophthalmology facility dedicated to providing Bermuda with the highest quality of eye care. Guided by its firm commitment to the patient, BIIO diagnoses ocular diseases, treats various vision disorders and performs advanced eye surgery. Its dedicated surgeons and staff provide compassionate, innovative and comprehensive eye treatments.
The institute delivers a wide range of techniques and procedures using the very latest technology. It provides cataract surgery using premium intraocular lens implantation, oculoplastic surgery, laser eye surgery for difficulty with near vision, and advanced treatment for conditions including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. It also performs a novel, in-office procedure, corneal cross-linking, for patients with keratoconus.
Notable achievements include the first multifocal lens implantation in Bermuda – providing patients the ability to see near and far simultaneously – and state-of-the-art management of retinal diseases. The institute also established a link with the Lahey Clinic to provide cutting-edge management of two of the leading causes of blindness in Bermuda: diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.
Additionally, visiting surgeons provide subspecialty care to patients with vitreo-retinal diseases, including macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and a pediatric ophthalmologist also visits regularly to provide subspecialist care for children.
The institute’s most important asset is its hard-working and dedicated staff, and it places enormous value on training and development sessions for employees. With the belief that a company is the sum total of what employees achieve individually, Bermuda International Institute of Ophthalmology strives to ensure that employees perform at their peak.
How to summarize Bermuda International Institute of Ophthalmology’s philosophy? The institute strives to provide care and compassion for every patient for better vision and quality of life. Its tagline says it all: “Caring For Vision. Enhancing Lives.”
