There’s a moment in everyone’s life when we realize that time has been moving faster than we thought. One day you feel like you have an endless runway, and the next, you’re facing decisions you wish you’d made years earlier. In my line of work, I’ve seen this happen far too often. I’ve also come to realize that it’s not that people don’t care, it’s that life gets busy, overwhelming, or maybe it’s just that things tend to fall off the radar when everything’s feeling nice and comfortable. Planning for the future doesn’t always feel urgent…until it suddenly is.
We wait, we postpone, we tell ourselves, “I’ll deal with it later.” But later sometimes has a way of showing up before we’re ready.
The reality is that real, intentional financial planning rewards those who start early, not those who can only react to unfortunate circumstances. This isn’t because it’s convenient or trendy, it’s because the right choices made now, in time, will accelerate everything you’re trying to achieve.
When you plan early, you put yourself in the driver’s seat. You control the pace, the direction, and the strategy. When you wait, you end up reacting to circumstances you didn’t choose and that’s more like a rollercoaster; you just have to hang on for the ride with little to no control at all.
Please take it from me, being reactive is always more expensive, more stressful, and more restrictive than being proactive. I experienced this myself when my father passed and I too wished I knew then what I know now, before he wasn’t able to qualify for life insurance.
I meet people all the time who say the same thing: “I should have started sooner.”
Having been through it myself, it’s one of the most honest, yet heartbreaking sentences I hear. The truth most people don’t want to talk about is that life insurance gets more expensive the older you get. Your health changes, your needs change, your responsibilities grow. Also, while you’re aging, the plans designed to protect your loved ones are aging too, and not in a good way.
Every year you wait, the cost goes up. Every year you wait, the risk goes up. Every year you wait, the likelihood of hearing “you’re no longer eligible” goes up. It’s a reality none of us want, but all of us need to acknowledge.
I’ve had conversations with mentally, emotionally, and financially ready people who’ve come in for life insurance only to be told that their health simply won’t allow them to qualify anymore. This is one of those moments that stick with you, not because they did anything wrong, but because they simply waited too long.
The cost of waiting isn’t only measured in dollars. It’s also measured in regret, in stress, and in the feeling of “if only.” When you start early, you lock in lower rates. You can secure stronger levels of coverage. You qualify with fewer complications. You have options instead of having your hand forced. Last, and certainly not least, you gain a priceless commodity earned through being intentional that cannot be purchased at the last minute: peace of mind.
Proactive planning lets you build your life from a place of confidence, not fear. From strength, not urgency. From clarity, not confusion. It allows you to create a succession plan that actually supports your family the way you intend. It allows you to choose, not scramble. It allows you to protect your future without sacrificing your present.
Financial planning isn’t something we talk about enough, especially in small communities where inaccurate word-of-mouth advice often spreads faster than real information. We rely on what our parents told us, what our friends think, or what the seemingly wise guy at the barbershop spoke about because he was so adamant. It sounded like truth, right?! However, we can no longer rely on the “he said, she said” dialog as our source for research and reality. We deserve better than that. Our families deserve better than that. Our future deserves better than that.
It’s time we normalize planning early. It’s time we normalize asking questions. It’s time we normalize aligned action, not just hoping for hope’s sake.
Every family deserves access to knowledge. Every household deserves a plan. Every community deserves the confidence that comes with being prepared.
Being proactive isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about respecting the best of what you’ve built and ensuring that under no circumstances will your hard work go down the drain due to unfortunate or unforeseen events. It’s about not waiting until life forces your hand because, in those moments, emotions are high, options are limited, and the decisions that should have been simple become unnecessarily difficult.
Proactivity gives you space. Reactivity takes it away.
Proactivity gives you clarity. Reactivity clouds it.
Proactivity gives you choice. Reactivity removes it.
When it comes to the people you love, the love embedded in your choices matters. When you lose your ability to choose for yourself, you are no longer free.
So:
Don’t wait until circumstances make the decision for you.
Don’t wait until the options are fewer and the costs are higher.
Don’t wait until you wish you’d started sooner.
Preparation isn’t a gamble. It’s a responsibility. It’s an act of love. It’s a sign of leadership – for yourself, your family, and your future – and now will always be the right time to take control.
