Curl up with a furry bundle of heartwarming cat memories in this tale of a life spent with Bermuda felines. Acclaimed island singer-songwriter Val Sherwood lovingly documents the lives and fortunes of the many rescue cats she has helped over the years, from her first kitten found on Bermuda’s Railway Trail to a busy and perpetual line of rescue kitties looking for their first homes when the vets and SPCA were full.
The book comprises 22 Bermuda stories, including runaways, kittens in hubcaps, troublesome felines and furry Christmas surprises. Sherwood also offers various tips on cat care along the way.
Other species get a mention, too—including daring rescues of traffic-dodging ducklings, and the adventures of a succession of lizards, toads and a tortoise.
On a serious note, the book encompasses many years ministering to animals in need, much of that alongside the recently dissolved Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau. Part proceeds of the book’s sales go to Cats Assistance and Trapping Services (CATs), Registered Bermuda Charity #986, which now fills that role for Bermuda’s cats in need.
Sherwood is well-known in Bermuda as a singer and songwriter, and she includes lyrics from her best-loved songs—many of which were inspired by local legends (Johnny Barnes, Neil Burnie)—and animal-themed poems. Sherwood, who was involved in the creation of the popular Railway Trail, includes a mix of her Bermuda songs, notably from her popular CD, BeFabulous.
The tales are accompanied by a colourful cover and delightful black-and-white illustrations by local artist Michelle Pasquin. The book was edited and designed by Brimstone Media.
