The Bermuda National Trust has published a second edition of the St. George’s volume of their Architectural Heritage series. Much has changed in St. George’s since the first edition was published 27 years ago and Dr Michael Jarvis, who wrote the first edition when he was a graduate student and is now an established professor and author of two important histories of the Eastern Atlantic and Caribbean, has revised the book. It includes the same general history of the parish and individual house stories, but several buildings have been added, photographs improved in some cases, ownership lists included and the great advance in archaeology covered. A sidebar tells the story of the discovery on Smith’s Island of the 1612 site of the first capital, before the settlers moved to the current town of St. George’s, and a foreword by Dr Edward Harris gives an overview of the historiography of the parish.
This Second Edition of St. George’s is an ideal Christmas present for all St. Georgians and anyone interested in its history or architecture. It is available at the Trust’s headquarters at Waterville in Paget and the Globe Museum in St. George’s, as well as the usual retail outlets.
