We all know as Bermudians mayonnaise is practically a national treasure – but what are some other uses for it that aren’t making a sandwich or dipping your fries into it?

Hair Conditioner: Mayonnaise can be used as a deep-conditioning treatment for dry or damaged hair. Apply a generous amount to damp hair, leave it on for 20-30 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. The oils and egg proteins can help to nourish and strengthen hair.

Grilled Cheese: Using mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of a grilled cheese sandwich results in a crispier, more evenly browned exterior. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of each slice of bread before grilling. This technique adds a slight tang and helps achieve perfect golden-brown, crispy bread.

Sticker and Label Remover: Break down sticky residue from labels or stickers by applying mayonnaise to the adhesive area, letting it sit for 15 minutes, and wiping it off.

Manicure Treatment: Mayonnaise can soften cuticles and strengthen nails. Soak your nails in a bowl of mayonnaise for about 5-10 minutes, then rinse off. Your cuticles will be softer and easier to manage.

Marinade for Meat: It can be used as a marinade for chicken, pork, or fish. It helps to tenderise the meat and keep it moist during cooking. Mix mayonnaise with herbs, garlic, and spices, then coat the meat and let it marinate for a few hours before grilling or baking.

Tarnish Remover: Remove tarnish from silver. Rub a small amount onto the tarnished area, let it sit for a few minutes, and then polish with a soft cloth. The vinegar in the mayonnaise helps to dissolve the tarnish.

Remove Tree Sap or Tar: If you have tree sap or tar on your skin, mayonnaise can help remove it. Apply it over the tar/sap, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it away with a cloth. The oils in the mayo help to break down the sticky sap.

Baking: Mayonnaise can be used in baking to add moisture and richness to cakes, muffins, and breads. It can replace some or all of the butter or oil in a recipe. For example, adding a couple of tablespoons of mayonnaise to a chocolate cake batter can make it extra moist and flavourful.
