When I was at The Bermudian for a visit last summer, Editor and fellow locavore Tina Stevenson raved about her favourite morning smoothie with hemp protein and Bermy Fresh sprouts. For those that haven’t jumped on the green smoothie train, I promise you that any and all ‘green’ flavour is hidden by the sweet coconut water and bananas, and creamy almond butter. If you are just starting out, I would avoid kale and swiss chard as they are strong in flavour when raw. Spinach is a good green to add as it has a pretty neutral flavour, but collard greens and romaine are also delicious. We are getting into cooler days here in Bermuda which means more of these greens will be available from local farmers. And as all Bermudians know, Bermuda bananas can be ripened and frozen for use all year round.
Ingredients:
1 small ripe Bermuda banana (or ½ a large banana), frozen or add 4 ice cubes
2 handfuls of spinach (or romaine / collards)
A small handful of Bermy Fresh sprouts (pea shoot is my favourite)
1 tbsp. almond butter
2 tbsp. hemp protein powder
½ cup coconut water, unsweetened
½ cup plant based mylk (*mylk is a dairy free alternative; coconut, almond, hemp, cashew are all delicious)
Optional add ins: a small chunk of broccoli or cucumber
Method:
Blend until smooth, usually about 1 minute or so. ENJOY!
