There are many benefits to hiring a personal trainer. The perfect trainer will keep your session interesting and challenging while pushing you safely to your max, and leave you excited for your next session. Going to the gym shouldn’t feel like pulling teeth. With so many personal trainers on the market, how do you know if you are choosing the right one for you.

1. Pick a trainer who you would want to be friends with. Sounds like common sense, but you are going to see this person a few times a week. Do yourself a favor and pick someone who’s company you enjoy. A great trainer finds a way of making you exercise without you even realizing. Maybe they share your same sense of humour, hobbies or even your sense of sarcasm. If your personalities don’t click, it will feel like the longest gym session of your life.

2. Your trainer should understand your lifestyle and what you’re trying to achieve. Not everyone who signs up for a trainer wants to have a six-pack. If you are an avid runner or cyclist, you should look for a trainer who takes your training outside the gym into consideration. If you are a busy mom or new to gym, you might want a trainer who won’t leave you legless for the next few days. It is especially important if you are injured or recovering from injury, that your trainer is aware and modifies workouts accordingly.

3. Pick a trainer with compassion. Not every day in the gym will be your greatest. Some days will seem like you are starting from scratch while other days you will completely rock your session. Pick a trainer who will motivate you in a way that works for you. You might respond to someone who will yell and scream at you to push harder, and others might need someone who will encourage in a gentler manner. Having a trainer that knows when to push you and equally knows when to back off might be the most important quality a trainer will possess.
