Located at The Waterfront on Pitt’s Bay, Waterfront Wellness is an innovative nutrition and fitness facility with top-of-the-line equipment (including Technogym spin studio) and a full complement of personal training and fitness classes. The Bermudian chats with Catherine Burns, AVP Nutrition, Wellness and Community Health, to learn more about the whole range of their services.
Whatever our stage of life or whatever time we live in, our health and wellness protect us against stress and amplify our happiness. That’s why Waterfront Wellness is passionate about elevating well-being and creating healthy habits.
Located at The Waterfront on Pitt’s Bay, Waterfront Wellness is an innovative nutrition and fitness facility with top-of-the-line equipment and a full complement of personal training and fitness classes. Led by an incredible team with decades of experience, members of Waterfront Wellness receive expert guidance in all areas of their wellness according to their personal interests or needs, whether in their use of the gym facility, in utilising nutrition services, or even in establishing corporate work-life balance.
“We are friendly, driven and motivated by your success,” says Catherine Burns, AVP Nutrition, Wellness and Community Health at Waterfront Wellness and founder of Nutrifit and Beat the Couch. “We provide expert nutrition services, individual and team fitness training, run programmes and even guided rehabilitation from chronic disease. Some of our members are just starting out on their health journey and others have been with us for years. Our services are tailored and customised to individual need – everyone feels comfortable here. It’s a very fun, driven and supportive environment thanks to our amazing staff!”
Waterfront Wellness has also changed and grown to meet the needs of the community. In the past year, the team has introduced a new after-school Teen Fitness programme, alongside nutrition talks for teens in school. Teen fitness classes encourage young people to try a variety of activities: spin, Blaze pods, cross-training, free weights, kickboxing and yoga. Other new offerings include a self-defence series and Les Mills classes, which include everything from yoga to HIIT, martial arts, indoor cycling, weight training, dance and more, set to amazing music across all genres. Supported by scientific research, Les Mills classes offer superior fitness results.
For those who are new to exercise and good nutrition, and may be overweight or even a lifelong smoker, Catherine recommends beginning with a 1-80 orientation. “The 1-80 gives each new member 80 minutes of personal training time divided into 20 minutes each for strength, cardio, mobility and nutrition. The accountability of four appointments is really helpful for getting the gym habit started. Then, we would encourage members to take part in Nutrifit—our six-week optimum nutrition programme. Improving fitness and nutrition does wonders for weight, energy levels and sleep habits and also puts people in a good position to give up smoking!”
A team of experts is involved in helping each member reach their personal health and fitness goals. Group fitness trainer and front of house manager Christina Dotson is the first friendly face that visitors see. Then there’s Yves Paul, Graham Frith and Oronde Camara, all personal and group trainers with decades of experience between them. Andrea Santucci teaches yoga, Jenna Engelbrecht provides behavioural nutrition and most recently, fitness instructors Gladwin Edness, Julia Henderson and Cathie Lombardi have joined the team. There really is something for everyone at Waterfront Wellness.
“We are more than just a gym,” adds Catherine. “By combining our fitness element with nutrition services, we offer a holistic approach to wellness. And our wellness philosophy—’live well with us’—is becoming integrated into The Waterfront’s other companies.” Miles Market, Harry’s Restaurant and The Cloud all offer Nutrifit-approved items for those looking for a healthier menu. Waterfront Wellness has also partnered with PALS Cancer Care to provide a six-week nutrition programme based on Nutrifit but tailored to the unique needs of cancer patients. Patients also have the opportunity to attend group counselling, yoga classes and to receive reflexology.
Waterfront Wellness has also adopted an “equaliser policy,” which provides financial assistance for nutrition and Beat The Couch, to those without health insurance or who are unable to afford their copays. “We care about providing access to expert fitness and nutrition services for those who would otherwise be excluded on financial grounds,” says Catherine.
The team also cares deeply about the daily health struggles many people face. “There is no doubt that what you eat and drink, and how you live your life, will either build you up or knock you down,” says Catherine. “We’re in the build-you-up business. We help our members to build buffers against stress and disease. We want all Bermudians to live their best lives, develop positive habits and experience joy every day. That’s why we’re here.”
