In 1965, the Bermuda Regiment was established as a modern, multi-racial military force, representing a significant milestone in Bermuda’s history. The regiment was formed through the amalgamation of the white Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps (BVRC) and the black Bermuda Militia Artillery (BMA), aiming to create a unified and inclusive defense unit that reflected the diversity of Bermuda’s population.
The formation of the Bermuda Regiment marked a crucial step towards integration, equality, and national unity, breaking down racial barriers that had previously divided the island’s military forces. In September 1965 HRH Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden, presented the regiment with their colours and became honourary Colonel.
