When clients become friends and projects become passions, magic happens. Such is the case for this enviable living room designed by Michele Smith at OBMI. “Barbara takes my lead much of the time and trusts my instinct which I very much appreciate,” said Smith. “I have been working with her for over 10 years now.”
The house always had an impressive view, but it took an act of nature to lead to the creation of a brand-new space to enjoy it. “After a hurricane blew off the covered porch which overlooks the Great Sound, I suggested that instead of just replacing the roof why not turn this space into the living room. The current one was dark and inset with small windows, so with such an opportunity to add a light-filled room, she jumped at the idea.”
To maximise the spectacular view, the designer decided to raise the roof to allow for eight-foot windows and a central folding glass wall leading out to an expanded outdoor entertaining porch. “The concept for this room was to provide everything my client had on her wish list: maximise the view, add light, create warmth in the winter months by incorporating a gas fireplace and include harmony by installing a pickled-oak flooring and lighter furniture pieces. All this provided her an entertaining space large enough for family and friends,” added Smith.
Styled with the intention of creating a peaceful place to relax, read or entertain, the colour palette is a blend of greys, taupes and off-whites accented with soft gold. The overall décor is traditional with a dash of modern, with clean, simple lines. “It is calming and reflective of Barbara’s personality and charm,” added Smith. “She loves the open space. It brings her happiness.”
The room was completed in 2014 and the designer is currently working with the client to expand the porch to the master suite to further enjoy that spectacular view—and perhaps create a new favourite room in the process.
