Although one of the rarest stones available on the market, amethyst has always enjoyed an elevated status due to the belief that it is synonymous with royalty and luxury and why the stone features heavily in royal crowns, scepters and rings. Ironically though, the Greek word “amethystos” means “not drunken” – The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from the purple stone in belief that it protected its owner from intoxication! Amethyst is the birthstone of February, which just so happens to be my birth month and while I’ll always be a summer girl at heart, I can’t help but celebrate the beautiful purple stone that is currently enjoying its moment in the spotlight.
