The 9th Biennial Charman Prize was awarded to Jayde Gibbons (aka Queendom Heights on Instagram) on Saturday, October 12th at Masterworks Museum of Art. The Charman Prize is a prestigious art competition established to honor John Chapman, a prominent businessman and art collector.
Every other year, Masterworks calls on local artists to submit works inspired by Bermuda. There are 5 categories and prize money totals $18,000.
Ms. Gibbons has worked full time as a photographer for six months and her award-winning black and white images taken on Good Friday depict life in Bermuda in a real and unfiltered way. Gibbons named her collection of images “Neighbourhood Kids” and was quoted by The Royal Gazette as saying that it was “a big win for Bermuda’s culture.”
Look out for more on Jayde Gibbons and her award-winning work in the Winter issue of The Bermudian, publishing December 1.
